Polyskimmer instalation and opperating instructions

When installing the Dragonfly Polyskimmer it helps to keep in mind that this is a light weight unit. Because of this it is important that the skimmer is connected to outlet hoses in such a way as to be able to float in the water freely and reasonably level. To help achieve this we include a set of tubes that fit between the skimmer connection and the infrastructure leading to the pumping equipment. When correctly assembled these have the effect of overcoming any interference that may cause the skimmer to be forced to lay unevenly in the water/liquid that it is to skim.
The dragonfly poly skimmer has 3 methods where by the skimming action can be adjusted or altered.
(1) The Central Head Retaining Cup is fitted to a threaded shaft. Turning the retaining cup will result in it moving up or down in relation to the level of the water. For example if upon starting the skimmer you find that the floating head tends to bob up and down in the water excessively simply turn the head retaining cup so it moves upwards until the floating head settles down.
(2) Unlike the stainless steel unit the main floats do not have a separate adjustment. To make an adjustment that causes the skimming equipment to sit deeper in the water you need to unscrew the caps from the top of the floats and add weight, a little at a time until you are satisfied with its position. To cause it to come up simply remove weight from the floats. The floats are delivered with ilmenite sand ballast. Extra weight can be made up of any thing that is convenient.
(3) By reducing or increasing the flow of water at the head. If it is found that the suction at the head is leading to excessive cavitation, i.e. it is sucking too much air regardless of the adjustments that are possible. This indicates that the pump is working above the limits of the skimmers range. In effect the suction at the head is too high. A lot of water coming into the head is no great advantage when skimming water therefore the answer lies in either fitting a smaller pump or having a bypass along the suction tube that takes water thereby reducing suction at the head,

Preferred pumps
Ideally floating skimmers are connected to pumps that have a steady suction this is both better for the skimmer from a wear and tear point of view, and because the less disturbance there is on the surface of the liquid the more effective the skim. Centrifugal pumps tend to add to emulsification of hydrocarbons. We recommend positive displacement pumps like the helical rotor pump or the double diaphragm pump. these have a nice steady flow of water and are virtually self priming in most situations as well as having a high head making them more effective where the water to be skimmed is far below the pump,

The Floating skimmer is a convenient primary separator of oils, fine floating weeds on ponds, dust, scum and other floating materials from the surface of water or other liquids; Because it floats it always keeps the skimming head in the correct position in relation to the water. Its floating head makes sure that there is always the most effective skim happening at the head. Any materials on the surface of the water are quickly attracted with the aid of surface tension to the skimmer head, No other method of skimming works as quickly or effectively in the removal of surface contaminants as a floating head weir skimmer.
The only moving part on the Dragonfly polyskimmer is the floating weir so there is absolutely no problem with wearing parts as one would find in belt skimmers. Disc skimmers, rope skimmers, tube skimmers and the myriad of other types of skimmer available on the market.
The Dragonfly Polyskimmer is normally set up with 25mm /1" connections standard. These connections can be enlarged to 32mm/ 1 1/2" if required. we have found however that the smaller size skims as effectively as any other size. If it is intended to take very large amounts of water it is best to set up a bypass to reduce the suction at the head of the skimmer. this is a situation that would apply to any small surface skimmer,
